The Longevity Advantage

"How Prioritizing Lifelong Wellness Actually Enhances Peak Performance"

I was doing a back rehab session, with a client in the gym this week and we were discussing how we're both approaching 40. My client's (whose anonymity will be protected for this story - you know who you are lol) response to the subject was shut the f*!ck up, I don't want to hear that! His approach to life, a typical type A+ game plan of sleep when you're dead and hustle hustle hustle, has been very successful in his business life but of late it looks like that might be contributing to some physical set-backs.

I immediately spouted my mantra of "Longevity over Performance". This has been my approach for the last 7 or 8 years and it's been serving me well. but what does it really mean?

Intro

In a world that often values instant results and immediate success, the concept of training for longevity over performance may seem counterintuitive. However, a growing body of evidence suggests that prioritizing lifelong wellness can actually lead to a higher peak performance in various aspects of life. In this blog post, we'll explore the reasons behind this shift in mindset and how cultivating a focus on longevity can contribute to reaching your ultimate performance potential.

The Myth of Short-Term Gains:

The traditional approach to training often emphasizes short-term gains, focusing on intense workouts and quick fixes to achieve immediate performance improvements. While this approach may yield temporary results, the results will dwarf in comparison to the compounding gains of a well-executed long-term plan. Short-term approaches usually discard the importance of sustainability and the long-term health of the individual. Over time, relentless pursuit of short-term gains can lead to burnout, injuries, and an actual decline in overall well-being.

Dad and I on an Alpine ride in 2022
Last year I was lucky enough to be able to ride with my dad in to the Alpine trails above Squamish. I think about that ride frequently as a training goal. My target is to still be capable of Alpine rides when I'm 68!

The Longevity Paradigm:

Training for longevity involves a holistic approach that prioritizes sustainable practices, including balanced nutrition, adequate rest, and mindful exercise. Longevity-based training recognizes the interconnectedness of physical, mental, and emotional well-being. By cultivating habits that promote overall health, individuals can create a foundation for a longer, more vibrant life.

The Ripple Effect on Performance:

Contrary to the misconception that prioritizing longevity hinders peak performance, it actually sets the stage for sustained excellence. Here's how:

Injury Prevention:

  • Longevity-based training emphasizes injury prevention through proper warm-ups, cool-downs, and attention to form during exercises.

  • By avoiding injuries, individuals can maintain a consistent training routine over the years, leading to gradual but sustainable improvements - which compound (like a good retirement plan)

Mental Resilience:

  • Long-term training fosters mental resilience and discipline, as individuals learn to appreciate the journey rather than fixating on immediate outcomes.

  • This mindset shift contributes to enhanced focus, determination, and the ability to overcome challenges, all of which are crucial for peak performance.

Adaptability and Consistency:

  • Longevity-based training necessitates adaptability in your approach and teaches you to incorporate diverse forms of exercise which in turn keeps your tissues healthier.

  • Consistency is key, and training methods that are enjoyable and sustainable over the long term foster a lifestyle that supports continuous improvement.

Holistic Wellness:

  • Optimal performance is not solely about physical fitness. Mental and emotional well-being play integral roles. If your goals aren't truly aligned with your values, you will not stick to the plan long-term.

  • Prioritizing longevity requires you to prioritize recovery. This means you'd better learn how to practice your movement and recovery with intent, stress management, and adequate sleep not only help you to live longer and healthier, they also contribute to a well-rounded, high-performance lifestyle

The Bottom line

In the pursuit of peak performance, a shift towards training for longevity is not a compromise but a strategic choice. By prioritizing overall well-being, individuals can lay the groundwork for sustained growth, reaching higher peaks in their performance than would be possible with a short sighted program. Embracing a long term approach to training, one that values the journey, will lead to a fulfilling and enduring experience that might just help you to realize your true genetic potential.
