When Shawna came to me, she shared how challenging it had become to keep up with her kids on family bike rides. As their interests shifted to the bike park, Shawna found herself feeling intimidated by the steepness, long runs, and technical terrain. She wanted to ride with confidence and be part of their adventures—but wasn’t sure how to get there.
That’s where my strength training program made the difference, giving her the tools to progress and rediscover her love for riding.
Building Strength, Balance, and Control
Shawna’s program was designed to build total body strength while preparing her for the physical demands of mountain biking. Her progress has been outstanding, with noticeable gains in control, balance, and endurance.
“The structured strength program that Alex designs for me has changed my riding and skiing. I like how each workout has balance between upper body, lower body, and core. And the workouts are structured over a longer period to produce readiness for the biking season. I’ve increased control and balance on my bike and now have the strength and muscular endurance to tackle long bike park runs.”
Strength That Stands the Test of Time
Shawna started the program at 46, and she’s made gains that she didn’t think were possible at her age. Her muscular endurance has dramatically improved, allowing her to ride stronger and longer.
“My muscular endurance has dramatically improved since I started working with Alex. Starting at 46, this is a huge gain. I would not have made this kind of progress on my own in the gym.”
Overcoming Fear and Building Skills
Shawna initially struggled with skill limitations and a fear of crashing. By combining consistent strength training with a gradual progression in the difficulty of her rides, she’s gained confidence and skills she didn’t know were attainable.
“I definitely faced skill limitations and fear of crashing on my bike. I’m addressing both by increasing the difficulty of what I ride very slowly and keeping up the good work at the gym. When I do try new things on my bike, I’m pleasantly surprised by my strength and how much it helps with bike maneuverability and body-bike separation.”
Confidence to Ride with Her Kids
One of Shawna’s biggest wins has been the ability to confidently ride with her kids at the bike park. While they may not always do the same runs, she’s now part of their biking adventures, something she never thought possible before.
“The program has greatly increased my confidence on the bike. I go to the bike park with my kids now! We don’t do the same runs (unless they’re warming up or keeping me company for a lap or two), but we arrive together, meet up at the bottom throughout the day, and leave all together.”
Why Strength Training is Worth It
Shawna’s advice for others considering strength training is simple:
“A structured strength program will get you biking better, keep you biking longer, and help you stay injury-free.”
Flexible Training for a Busy Life
Shawna has found remote training to be the perfect fit for her lifestyle. With workouts delivered via an app and regular communication to keep her on track, the program has seamlessly integrated into her routine.
“Remote training allows me to go to the gym at a time of day that works for me. I have a workout ready to go on my app, with videos of each exercise. I can ask Alex questions through the chat, and we have monthly appointments for longer chats. This is exactly what I needed at this stage of my life.”
